Caring for Your Skin Post-Treatment | What You Need to Know
Undergoing a Permanent Makeup or Aesthetics procedure is an exciting step towards enhancing your natural beauty, but the journey doesn’t end when you leave the clinic. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure the best results and to support your skin as it heals. Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your skin after your treatment, helping you maintain your stunning new look with minimal discomfort.

What to Expect After Your PMU Procedure
It’s normal to experience some minor side effects in the days following your Permanent Makeup procedure. Depending on the area treated, you may notice flaking, redness, dryness, swelling and itching as the skin heals. Don’t worry – these are all part of the natural healing process.
General Post-Treatment Care
For the first few days after your treatment, it’s crucial to follow the aftercare advice provided by your artist to ensure the best healing and pigment retention. Here’s a general guide to follow:
- Initial Cleansing: Approximately 3-4 hours after your treatment, gently wash the treated area with Clinisept or PTSC Spray. This step is important to remove any lymph fluid or excess pigment stuck on the newly treated brows, lips, or areola. For eyeliner treatments, gently bathe your eyes with the saline provided or with Optrex, which can be purchased at your local pharmacy. Blot dry carefully to avoid scab formation and reduce the risk of infection.
- Daily Cleansing: For up to 3 days post-treatment, clean the area twice daily using a clean cotton pad with PTSC Spray or Clinisept. Follow this by applying a thin layer of Vaseline or Bepanthen to keep the area moisturised.
- Switching to Crème Rescue Serum: On day 4, continue with the cleansing protocol, but replace the Vaseline or Bepanthen with Crème Rescue Serum. This healing serum accelerates the healing process and improves pigment retention. It supports skin regeneration and hydration, providing your skin with the nutrients it needs to recover swiftly and beautifully.
Additional Aftercare Tips
- Avoid Getting the Area Wet: For 7-10 days after your treatment, try to avoid getting the treated area wet beyond the cleansing protocol. If the area does get wet, pat dry very gently with a clean tissue and use PTSC Spray to soothe and protect the skin.
- Steer Clear of Excessive Exercise and Swimming: Avoid activities that cause excessive sweating or expose the area to water, such as swimming or using a spa, for at least 7-10 days. Wait at least 7-10 days before swimming in the sea or a pool, and stay out of direct sunlight.
- No Scratching or Picking: As your skin heals, you may feel the urge to scratch or pick at the treated area – resist this! Scratching or picking can lead to scarring and affect the final results of your treatment.
- Monitor Colour Changes: It’s common for the colour of your PMU to appear up to 70% darker immediately after the treatment. Don’t be alarmed – the colour will fade after 4-7 days, with the final healed colour becoming visible after 4 weeks.
- Specific Advice for Brows, Lips, and Eyeliner: Each area requires unique care. For instance, brow treatments may experience significant colour loss between your first treatment and touch-up. Use brow cosmetics after 3 days to maintain colour intensity. For lips, avoid kissing or eating hot/spicy food immediately after treatment, and remember to start your course of antiviral medication if you’ve ever had cold sores. For eyeliners, clean and soothe the eyes with PTSC Spray compresses to avoid complications.
